James Gulley Obituary, Charlotte, NC Death – Family and Friends Mourn Beloved Coach

The Charlotte, North Carolina, community is mourning the sudden loss of James Micheal Gulley, a beloved fitness coach, former professional soccer player, devoted father, and respected member of the athletic community. James died on August 8, 2026, at the age of 33.

James was known for his passion for sports, fitness, and helping others. He played Division I soccer at the University of Tulsa before pursuing professional soccer in Sweden with Karlslunds IF HFK in 2017. He later returned to Mississippi, where he continued playing with Gaffa FC.

His athletic journey began in Mississippi, where he played soccer in Clinton before joining the Chicago Fire Juniors of Mississippi, later known as Mississippi Rush. He also represented Mississippi ODP and the Region Pool.

Following his playing career, James built a career in fitness coaching. He worked as an online coach with Evolve MVMT and was also associated with The Health Club, Barry’s, and Flywheel Sports. In Charlotte, he became known for encouraging others to build strength, endurance, and sustainable fitness habits.

James was also an avid runner and HYROX and hybrid athlete. Friends, teammates, coaches, and members of the fitness community remembered him for his infectious smile, positive personality, and ability to make those around him feel better.

Mississippi Rush Soccer Club described his passing as an unexpected loss and remembered him as more than a talented soccer player, highlighting his roles as a son, father, friend, teammate, coach, and runner. The MOTION fitness community likewise mourned a friend and teammate whose presence had made a lasting impact.

James is survived by his son, Archer P. Collins-Gulley, his parents, Jim and Marie Gulley, and his brother, Kellen. His mother, Marie Ellis-Gulley, expressed profound grief over the loss of her beloved son.

His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support his family and son.

James Gulley’s memory will live on through his family, friends, teammates, athletes, and the many people he inspired through his passion, kindness, and dedication to helping others.
