DUNDALK, IRELAND — James McGuill, a respected Dundalk rugby figure and highly regarded Senior Counsel, has died, prompting tributes from the rugby, legal and wider Dundalk communities. Dundalk Rugby Football Club announced the news on September 6, extending its condolences to the McGuill family and remembering James as a formidable prop, club official and highly respected member of the community. Remembering James McGuill McGuill was a prominent figure at Dundalk Rugby Football Club throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His playing career included a notable achievement as captain of the Dundalk side that reached the McGee Cup final. Historical records also show McGuill captained the Dundalk III team that won the McGee Cup in 1988, ending a 14-year wait for the trophy. Beyond the pitch, McGuill served as secretary of the club during the 1990s, further demonstrating his longstanding commitment to Dundalk rugby. Respected Legal Career McGuill also built a distinguished career in the legal profession. He was recognised as a Senior Counsel and took on cases at European and international levels. His legal career brought him into important proceedings and professional organisations. Oireachtas records from 2019 identified him as a Dundalk man who had served as vice-president of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, reflecting his standing within the wider legal profession. He was also involved in significant legal cases and public inquiries over the years, including representing families before an Oireachtas subcommittee examining historical violence in Dundalk. Tributes From Dundalk Those remembering McGuill have described him as a gentleman who earned the respect of colleagues, friends and members of the communities in which he was involved. His connection to Dundalk stretched across sport, law and community life, leaving him known well beyond the rugby field and courtroom. Dundalk Rugby Football Club offered its sincere condolences to the extended McGuill family, saying James would be sadly missed by his many friends in Dundalk and far beyond. I was saddened and shocked to learn of Jim MacGuill’s passing. During my time at UCC Jim was one of the towering figures on campus. I had the pleasure of serving as his Financial Secretary on the committee of the Philosophical Society during his year as Auditor. Auditor was the top job and the society was a the the center of college life. People like Michael Foot, then leader of the British Labor Party, and Edgar Graham, a leading Unionist, would speak at our gatherings. Even though Jim’s sympathies lay elsewhere, he was always respectful and a gentleman. Jim and I were as close as you could get without never actually being social friends. When Oliver Flanagan came to UCC, and reminded us all that sex never came to Ireland before RTE, Jim was polite and deferential. I always respected him. And even though our paths never crossed again after college, such was his colorful life and his bright illustrious career, I always seemed to be aware of what Jim was up to and never felt that far apart.
