Peter Brock Obituary, Perth, AU Death – Family and Motorsport Community Mark 20 Years Since Racing Legend’s Fatal Crash

The family of Australian motorsport legend Peter Brock and members of the racing community are marking 20 years since his death in a fatal rally crash near Perth.

Brock, widely known as the “King of the Mountain,” died on September 8, 2006, after crashing during a rally race at Gidgegannup, near Perth. He was 61.

His death brought an extraordinary outpouring of grief across Australia, with a state funeral held in Victoria and spontaneous tributes appearing at racing tracks around the country.

Remembering Peter Brock

Brock’s son, Rob Brock, reflected on the lasting impact his father had on Australian life, describing his influence as “indelible.” Away from the fame and attention that accompanied his racing career, he remembered his father as a “weird, beautiful dork.”

His stepson, James Brock, also recalled Brock’s remarkable ability behind the wheel, saying his driving could appear to defy the laws of physics.

James raced alongside his stepfather on several occasions, including their V8 Ute series victory at Mount Panorama in 2003. Sharing the podium with Brock remains a memory he treasures.

A Record-Breaking Career

Brock made his professional racing debut at Mount Panorama in 1969 and went on to establish one of the most celebrated careers in Australian motorsport.

He won the Bathurst 1000 nine times, a record that remains unmatched. Across 212 Touring Car Championship starts, Brock recorded 48 race victories and three championships.

He was inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2001.

His Legacy Continues

An exhibition celebrating Brock’s career opened Tuesday at the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of his death.

Museum coordinator Brad Owen said Brock remained one of the best-known names in Australian motorsport history, with his influence on Mount Panorama helping the Bathurst 1000 gain international recognition during the 1970s and 1980s.

Two decades after his death, Peter Brock’s name continues to hold a special place in Australian racing, remembered not only for his extraordinary achievements but also for the enduring mark he left on generations of motorsport fans.
