The University of Iowa community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Derek Phillips, a dedicated marching band member whose passion for music, kindness and joyful spirit touched those around him.

Derek suffered a sudden cardiac arrest Saturday, shortly before the University of Iowa marching band was scheduled to perform during halftime. He was taken to a nearby University of Iowa hospital, where medical professionals worked to save his life. His family later shared that the brain damage he suffered was too severe for him to survive, and life support was ultimately withdrawn.

For Derek’s family and friends, his death is remembered not simply through the circumstances of his final hours, but through the happiness he brought to others. His family described him as a “beacon of joy,” recalling his humor, warmth and kindness.

A Life Centered on Music

Music played a defining role in Derek’s life. He was remembered as a phenomenal musician who expressed himself through jazz, singing and marching band performances. The University of Iowa marching band ultimately decided not to perform its scheduled halftime show because of the heat and concerns for the health and safety of students and staff.

The decision carried an especially painful significance following Derek’s medical emergency.
