Kurt Cobain, the iconic frontman, guitarist and primary songwriter of Nirvana, died on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27. His body was discovered three days later at his home in Seattle, Washington.

Cobain’s death was officially ruled a suicide. He had struggled for years with heroin addiction, chronic health problems and depression, while also facing the intense pressures that came with Nirvana’s extraordinary rise to international fame.

Born in Aberdeen, Washington, Cobain formed Nirvana with bassist Krist Novoselic in 1987. Cobain was married to musician Courtney Love, and they had one daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.
