Nigeria is mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82. Buhari died in a London clinic at approximately 4:30 p.m. following a prolonged illness, according to an announcement from the Nigerian presidency.

Buhari was one of the most prominent and consequential figures in modern Nigerian political history. A former military officer who rose to the rank of major general, he first led Nigeria as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 following a military coup. Decades later, he returned to democratic politics and was elected President of Nigeria in 2015, serving two terms before leaving office in May 2023.
