SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A person has died following a reported shooting Tuesday afternoon near Howe Avenue in Sacramento County, prompting a major law enforcement response and temporary closures on Highway 50. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said deputies began receiving multiple calls about a shooting around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the 800 block of Howe Avenue, just north of Fair Oaks Boulevard. Deputies arrived and found one person unresponsive at the scene. Medics responded, but the person was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity or provided a detailed account of what led to the shooting. Panera Shooting Investigation Initial reports circulating from the scene indicated that the shooting occurred at or near a Panera Bread location on Howe Avenue. Those details have not been fully confirmed by authorities. A vehicle stop on eastbound Highway 50, just south of the shooting location, became part of the law enforcement response. The Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle stop was believed to be connected to the Howe Avenue shooting and involved a barricaded person. The incident caused significant traffic disruption, with Highway 50 closed in the area between Howe and Watt avenues while officers investigated. Highway 50 Closure Motorists were urged to avoid the area as law enforcement worked to secure the freeway and surrounding locations. Traffic delays extended across nearby roads as drivers were diverted around the closure. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the relationship between those involved and whether a suspect was taken into custody, remained under investigation in the latest official reports. Authorities had not publicly confirmed reports describing the incident as a murder-suicide. The investigation remains active, and additional information about the victim, suspect and circumstances of the shooting is expected to be released as authorities continue their work.
