Romane Leers, France Accident Death – 19-Year-Old Dies After Violent Crash

LEERS, France — A community in Leers, in northern France, is mourning the death of 19-year-old Romane, who died Sunday, September 6, from injuries sustained in a violent traffic accident the previous day.

The crash occurred Saturday, September 5, on rue de Wattrelos in Leers. According to initial information reported by authorities and local media, Romane was traveling in a vehicle with her mother when they were struck by another car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old who did not have a driving licence.

Local reports stated that the teenager was allegedly traveling at more than 100 km/h on a road where the speed limit was 30 km/h. The young driver was also reportedly accused of renting the vehicle while presenting himself as his 19-year-old brother, allowing him to drive a powerful Volkswagen Golf.

Another 17-year-old passenger was reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the collision.

The impact was described as extremely violent. Romane suffered serious injuries and died the following day. Her mother and another woman were also seriously injured in the crash.

Investigation Underway

An investigation has been launched to establish the precise circumstances of the collision and determine responsibility for the tragedy.

According to reports cited by local media, the teenage driver was brought before a judge on Monday, September 7. The Lille prosecutor’s office reportedly requested that he be placed in pretrial detention as the investigation continues.
