The Cape Breton community is mourning the loss of Stephanie Comeau, a 46-year-old woman remembered by former colleagues, friends and loved ones as a kind, funny and generous person whose presence brought warmth to those around her.

Comeau died Saturday during a period of severe rainfall and flooding in Richmond County, according to a local report. Her former employer, Strait Supplies, shared a heartfelt tribute following her death, describing her as a much-loved member of the company family.

Remembering Stephanie Comeau

Known affectionately as “Stephie” and “Sheila,” Comeau worked with Strait Supplies in several term positions over recent years. Her return to the workplace was always welcomed by colleagues, who remembered her dry wit, playful personality and love of practical jokes.

The company said that whenever there was an opportunity for some “trickery,” Stephanie was ready to join in. Her sense of humour and willingness to bring some lighthearted fun into the workplace made her a memorable colleague and friend.

Stephanie was also an accomplished photographer. Some of her work was featured on Strait Supplies’ website and Facebook page and displayed in the store on several occasions.

Her former colleagues remembered her not only for her creativity and humour but also for her kindness, generosity and gentle nature.

“She will be forever remembered as a kind, funny, generous, and gentle co-worker and friend,” Strait Supplies said in its tribute.

Community mourns tragic loss

Stephanie’s death has brought additional sorrow to a Cape Breton region already dealing with the aftermath of significant flooding. More than 200 millimetres of rain fell in the hardest-hit areas, causing widespread damage and difficult recovery efforts across parts of Richmond County.

As crews continue working to repair roads and properties, Stephanie’s family, friends and former colleagues are grieving a deeply personal loss.

Her passing leaves what Strait Supplies described as a “gaping hole” in the lives of those who knew her.

The company extended its heartfelt sympathy to Stephanie’s family and loved ones, concluding its tribute with a simple farewell: Rest in Peace, Stephanie.
