The Montreal music community is mourning the death of Susan Moss, an acclaimed concert photographer whose work and passion for live music made her a familiar presence at rock shows across the city.

Moss died Friday at the age of 58, about a month after learning that she had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, according to a profile published by the Montreal Gazette on September 5, 2026.

A fellow music photographer who knew Moss described her passing as heartfelt, remembering her not only for her photography but also for the shared passion that connected those who documented Montreal’s music scene.

Moss chose medical assistance in dying (MAID) as she approached the end of her life. In an interview with the Montreal Gazette the day before her death, she spoke openly about her decision and expressed peace with the limited time she had left.

“I’m really at peace because I didn’t think I was going to live old,” Moss said.
