John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, is remembered as one of Nigeria’s best-known comic actors following his death on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62.

Okafor was born on October 17, 1961, in Umunekwu, in present-day Enugu State, Nigeria. He built a career in Nollywood spanning decades and became widely recognized for his distinctive comedic performances and memorable characters.

Mr. Ibu appeared in more than 200 Nollywood films during his career, including productions associated with the popular “Mr. Ibu” series. His performances made him a familiar face to audiences in Nigeria and across Africa, establishing him as a prominent figure in the country’s entertainment industry.

Before becoming a major screen personality, Okafor worked in several different fields and also pursued interests in photography, hairstyling, boxing, football and karate. He later developed his career in acting and comedy, eventually becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognizable entertainers.

In the months before his death, Okafor experienced serious health problems. His family revealed that he underwent multiple surgeries and eventually had a leg amputated in November 2023 after an illness threatened his life. He had previously appealed to the public for assistance with his medical treatment.

Okafor died at Evercare Hospital in Lagos on March 2, 2024. Reports stated that he died following cardiac arrest. He was 62.

News of his passing prompted mourning across Nigeria’s entertainment community, with fans remembering the humor and distinctive screen presence that made Mr. Ibu a household name.

His career left a lasting mark on Nigerian comedy and Nollywood. Through hundreds of film appearances and years of entertainment, John Okafor created characters that brought laughter to audiences and established him as a memorable figure in African popular culture.

Mr. Ibu’s legacy continues through the films and performances that introduced generations of viewers to his unique brand of comedy.
