King Harald V of Norway died on August 28, 2026, at the age of 89, bringing an end to a 35-year reign. His death was followed by a state funeral in Oslo on September 9, where members of Norway’s royal family, foreign monarchies and political leaders gathered to pay their respects.

Born in 1937, Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. He spent more than three decades as Norway’s head of state and became widely known for his approachable personality and close connection with the Norwegian people.

Harald’s reign coincided with significant changes in Norwegian society and the wider world. While maintaining the traditions of the monarchy, he was regarded as a modernizing figure who helped keep the institution connected to contemporary Norway.

Together with Queen Sonja, whom he married in 1968, Harald represented the Norwegian royal family at major national and international occasions. Their marriage lasted 57 years.

The king was also known for his interests outside official duties, including sailing and sports. His Olympic sailing background became an important part of his public identity, and he represented Norway at several Olympic Games.

During his final years, Harald experienced several health challenges and periods of hospitalization. He died at 89 after a long life of public service.

Following his death, thousands of Norwegians gathered to leave flowers and pay tribute. More than 46,000 people visited the royal chapel while he lay in state.

His September 9 funeral in Oslo Cathedral marked the formal farewell to a monarch who had served Norway since 1991. His son succeeded him as king.

King Harald V leaves behind a legacy defined by decades of service, continuity and a strong personal connection with the people of Norway. His reign represented one of the longest chapters in modern Norwegian royal history.
