Sam Loco Efe, one of Nigeria’s most recognizable veteran actors and filmmakers, died on August 7, 2011, at a hotel in Amakohia, Owerri, Imo State. He was 66 years old according to contemporary reports. His death marked a major loss for Nollywood and the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Born Samuel Arase Efeimwonkiyeke, Sam Loco built a celebrated career across theatre, television and film. He became widely known for his distinctive comic performances, expressive delivery and ability to bring memorable characters to life. His work helped establish him as one of the veteran performers of Nigeria’s developing film industry.

Among the films associated with his career were Osuofia in London, Ukwa, Tom and Jerry, Long John, Vigilante, Husband My Foot, Owo Blow and I’ll Take My Chances. He also worked behind the camera as a director and producer.

Before his death, Sam Loco had been working on a film project in Owerri. According to reports, he spent the evening joking with colleagues before retiring to his hotel room. When he failed to come down the following morning, colleagues became concerned. The room was eventually opened, and he was found unresponsive inside.

Reports at the time discussed asthma and other possible health problems, with Ventolin inhalers reportedly found in the room. However, the circumstances surrounding his death were investigated, and the precise cause was not immediately established.

Sam Loco’s passing prompted an outpouring of grief from fellow actors, filmmakers, political leaders and admirers. His funeral in Benin City later that year drew large numbers of Nollywood figures and mourners who gathered to celebrate his life and contributions to Nigerian entertainment.
