The family of Stephen Douglas McDougall, affectionately known as “Mookie” and “Big Dawg,” is mourning his sudden passing in Ottawa at the age of 61.

Steve died on the evening of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, according to his family. A family member said the devastating news came unexpectedly and that he had reportedly died from a suspected heart attack.

A recently retired Ottawa Police Officer, Steve was remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, dedicated police officer, caring brother, loyal friend and active community volunteer. He was also known for his humour and quick wit, regularly bringing laughter to those around him.

Stephen McDougall Remembered

Steve’s family described him as a kind-hearted and loving man who took tremendous pride in his family and his career. His wife, Tara, and children, Gavin and Sadie, were at the centre of his world.

He was especially proud of his children’s achievements. He supported Gavin through his hockey career, including his time with the Kemptville 73’s Junior A team, and proudly followed Sadie’s volleyball career and her studies at Bishop’s University as she pursued her dream of becoming a teacher.

Steve also treasured time with extended family, fishing on the St. Lawrence River, family trips to Prince Edward Island and the many everyday moments spent with those he loved.

His beloved dog, Hazel-Mae, was another constant companion and much-loved part of the family.

Family and Community Mourn

Steve is survived by Tara, Gavin and Sadie, as well as his siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends who will deeply miss him.

His sudden death has left an enormous void for those who knew him. Family members are now holding onto the memories of his humour, generosity, love and unwavering support.

A Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held on September 12, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 105 Bennett Road, Kemptville, Ontario, K0G 1J0.

The family expressed gratitude to Dermid and Donna Lee O’Farrell for allowing them to gather and celebrate Steve’s life on their property.

May Stephen Douglas McDougall rest in peace, and may his family, friends and loved ones find strength and comfort in the memories they shared with him.
