The Kennedy High School community in La Palma, California, is mourning the passing of Coach Kris Johnson, affectionately known as “KJ,” whose years of service left a lasting impact on the school’s athletics program, campus and students.

Kris was a Kennedy football player before graduating from the school in 1984. He later returned to coach football and served as the head track and field coach, becoming an important part of Kennedy Athletics for many years.

His contributions extended well beyond coaching. Kris served the campus as a resident and long-term substitute teacher, taking over classrooms for entire semesters on multiple occasions, primarily within the English department. His willingness to step in and support the school reflected the dedication he brought to the Kennedy community.

Kris was also a familiar presence at Kennedy sporting events. For years, he served as the primary timer for varsity football and basketball games, providing an important behind-the-scenes role in the operation of athletics programs.

Kennedy Athletics described Kris as an invaluable member of the program and the broader Kennedy High School campus and community, emphasizing that his support, sacrifices and importance to the daily workings of the school could not be underestimated.

Outside of Kennedy, Kris worked for years at Disneyland. He was also known for his love of rock concerts, movies, UCLA tailgates and Pittsburgh sports teams.

His passing represents a significant loss for the many students, athletes, teachers, coaches and colleagues who knew him throughout his years at Kennedy. His connection to the school stretched from his days as a student to decades of service as a coach, educator and athletics supporter.

The Kennedy community is now remembering Kris for the time, energy and commitment he gave to the school he once attended and later served.

“God speed, KJ. You will be missed.”
